Donating blood is a decision
that must be made by the individual. It is a process that is safe and sterile,
and it can be done many times in the life of a person. When the person decides they want to donate blood, they can call their
local American DKMSoffice to get more information. However, there are some basic things that
everyone should know about donating blood.
Some people may think that the
procedure is not clean. This is not true. Each time someone new donates blood,
a new needle is used. Used needles are placed in a container so that no one
else can touch them. When the person has
decided to go through with the procedure, they must register before they can
donate. A medical history is taken to determine if the person can safely
give blood.
There are conditions that a
person may have had in the past that would make them ineligible to donate. Some
of the conditions include jaundice, cancer and AIDS. If the patient passes the
initial examination, they have their temperature, blood pressure and pulse
taken. If the donor has a temperature, they will not be allowed to donate. The
minimum age of a donor is 17, and there are weight limits that the donor must
adhere to. The normal weight for donating is around 117 pounds.
After the health of the
patient is cleared for donation, the process will begin. The entire process of donating blood usually
takes less than 15 minutes. About one
pint of blood is given when the person donates. The body has 10 pints of blood,
so missing one pint will not harm the person. Blood can be donated every 56-60
days. The blood that is donated is tested for diseases before it is given to
hospitals and emergency services for them to use. The donor usually does not
know if their blood has been used or denied unless there are health concerns that
the donor needs to know about.
In the United States alone,
there are about 16 million donations each year. This is a small number for the
amount of people who live in the country. The
actual amount of people who donate blood is less than 10 million. Less than
40% of the people in the country are eligible to donate blood. This means that
there are only a few people who can donate the necessary blood required for
hospitals and emergency medical services. Hospitals cannot make their own
blood.
They depend on the donations
of individuals to keep their blood banks stocked in the event of emergencies.
Natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes deplete the amount of blood
in storage more than anything else. People with type O negative blood can donate
to anyone. It is a blood type that is used in emergencies because it is
considered a universal donor blood type. The type AB positive is considered the
universal plasma to be given to patients.
There are several reasons why people don’t donate blood. Most of the time people are too young or not
of the correct weight to donate. One of the most common reasons why people
choose not to donate if they are eligible is because they don’t like needles.
Three people can be saved from the donation of one person.
Donors are not paid for their
time it takes them to donate. They are not pressured into donating, but there
are events that DKMS Americas and other businesses hold each year to try to get
more donors. Of all the donors in the country, about half of them are regular
donors.
Hi there! I worked as a Red Cross volunteer before, which is why I really understand that it is important to give blood. Ironically, I haven't had the chance to do it o far although I certainly will in the future. :)

ReplyDeleteThe main reason why people do not donate blood is because no one has asked them to do so. If we motivate people, they will come forward.
